The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
