"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos often depict them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to form a group."

"So anyone is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global audience.

But the band will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
