The Global Health Body Raises Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections
Less than one in 10 individuals that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its first guidance on the drugs.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be treated with holistic and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage
Even under the current best projected case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.
The guideline urges nations and manufacturers to increase access, through measures including licensing agreements.
Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of a leading brand – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.
